Make Sure Your Loved Ones on Medicare Aren’t Making this Mistake

Dental Savings Plan, Medicare, Retirement, Seniors

Once you turn 65 you are eligible for Medicare health insurance. As great as this program is, Medicare does not cover everything.

One of its shortcomings is that dental coverage is not part of standard coverage, nor is it included in a supplemental Medigap policy. (Some dental coverage may be included in a Medicare Advantage plan.)

A recent survey estimates that about one-third of Americans at least 65 years old have not been to the dentist in two years. No doubt, the out-of-pocket expense is likely keeping many seniors from maintaining oral health.

This is not about just having clean teeth. Poor dental hygiene has been linked to serious disease, including diabetes and heart problems.

If you have a loved one who is over 65, I want you to make sure they are having regular dental check-ups, and are not foregoing care.

You can help them find affordable care with a dental savings plan.

Dental savings plans aren’t insurance. Think of it more like Costco: you pay an annual membership fee (it can be less than $100) and then you have access to participating dentists that offer upfront discounts on their services. I found a great deal for myself at dentalplans.com.

Depending on your plan and the dentist you choose, you might get a price break of 10% to 60%. And there is no deductible, or claims to submit. Once you are enrolled, all you need to do is find a dentist in your plan’s network. (If you have a dentist you like, ask them if they participate in any plans.) Then bring your membership card and you will get the discount. That’s a great deal that will put a smile on anyone’s face.
